I am thinking of upgrading the cabin top winches on Sparkplug. Does anyone have a suggestion of size and should I go self tailing. Lewmar has some good deals these days.
Hopefully the ice melts soon!

Self tailing isn't allowed by the class rules and really isn't helpful. After all the clutches are just in front of them. The existing winch is a maxwell 14 which is smaller than a harken 8 but slightly bigger than a harken 6. Most owners seem to be sure they go to the up side.

Also....self tailers in that position will be slower to unload when changing lines on the winch. Self tailing winches can be a pain at times to get the wraps off in a hurry, you have to physically unwind the line on the barrel to clear the self tailer. Without tailers just pull straight up and presto the line is off.
