Recent photos of the 2012 NA’s have me considering a dream I’ve had for some time; participating – possibly in 2013. But I live in Florida.

Option 1 is to charter a boat. How feasible would that be?

Option 2 is trailering mine up. But my boat isn’t quite class legal. How strict is the class on the following:

Back stay is hi-tech line, not wire
Lifelines are hi-tech line, not wire
Halyards have covers removed beyond clutches
Vang doesn’t lead “to the deck” it has a cleat on the blocks, similar to a J-24.
Outhaul doesn’t lead to the deck, it has cleat under boom and probably an 8:1 purchase inside

Otherwise the boat is class legal; no modifications to hull, keel, rudder, deck, mast, or boom. I carry all cushions and the table. Interior is stock. Sails should measure in.

I also would be curious as to the feasibility of some OD rule changes allowing synthetic life lines, backstays, & tapered sheets. Not sure how the vang cleated or more purchase for the outhaul would help? the original systems seem to work fine for us. here on the south shore of lake ontario we have 3 boats already actively racing and would be interested in fleet status or a US Association for the Laser 28......

Those are relatively minor changes to your boats and if you ask for dispensation to sail with other class boats at a class sanctioned regatta I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem. We like to be inclusive but at the same time recognize that one design fleets are now sparse thru out north america. Tapered spinn sheets are allowed within the rules. The International class association does exist for owners who would like to establish a fleet. The rules pertaining to this specifically are found here  http://www.laser28.org/Class.aspx?selpage=Constitution - http://www.laser28.org/Class.aspx?selpage=Constitution

So, how hard would it be to charter a boat for a north american?

Jon167-the only reason I changed my vang and outhaul is to spread the work load out some. It gives the "hikers" more to do than just ballast.

That wouldn't be easy. All boats are raced up here. You can always post here to ask that question.
