Here is a copy of the e mail from the Can Am challenge organizing committee.

CanAm Challenge
July 26-27, 2014

Inaugural CanAm Challenge at the Youngstown Yacht Club
You have received this email because you have previously attended one or many of our previously held Level Regattas at the Youngstown Yacht Club. We all loved the “Level” and there were many aspects of the event that will be missed. However, we have decided to move on and start a new, exciting event to replace the Level called the “CanAm Challenge” planned for July 26-27, 2014. So in order to spread the word, we thought we’d answer some questions that some of you may have. Our goal is to put on a great event and start a new tradition that will be fun for all.

Why the CanAm Name? Traditionally our fleet is made up of sizable entries from both countries, we are on the border, and those of us on the south side want a chance to make up for what our Olympic hockey teams were unable to do. Beside, AmCan doesn't have a very nice ring to it, and being good neighbors we decided to put our Canadian friends first. The Challenge part stems from the fact we will have an overall scoring contest between boats from both countries, using a highly scientific methodology being created right now. Each year the winning country will have their name engraved on the CanAm trophy for bragging rights. Every boat in the event will enter into the scoring so it’s not only about the top few boats.

CanAm Racing will be DIFFERENT: This is a one-design event, no longer split into Level-type fleets. The course racing will be limited to one-design fleets that can muster up the necessary five boats, (65 boats are currently signed up). If you have not yet done so, please get with the program by signing up here CanAm Challenge Registration on Yachtscoring. Another change to racing is that we plan to offer some variety in the closed course configurations, not limited to W-Ls only, which will be at the discretion of the race committee.

Pursuit classes ADDED: We have recently decided to add “Pursuit” racing for other boats that would like to try the CanAm but are not one-designs. We will use PHRF ratings and are opening it to spinnaker and non-spinnaker fleets, one somewhat longer race per day. Pursuit racing is gaining in popularity and we like to try new things.

MORE INCLUDED WITH YOUR ENTRY FEE: We've added more bang for your buck. Entry fee includes free launch and haul out for boats under 40 feet, free storage of trailers for the regatta’s duration, wristbands for the crew, skipper bag, food and social events. A wristband includes entry to the club premises, live music entertainment each day, social activities, a chicken dinner on Saturday night, discounted beer and rum specials, coffee and light breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, pizza and refreshments on Sunday during haul-out.   Wristbands come with entry fee, up to 25’ = 4 wristbands, 26-29’ = 5, 30-34’ = 6, 35-39’ = 7, 40’ plus = 8. You can also buy additional wristbands for $25 each.

SOCIAL EVENTS: In addition to what was listed in the entry fee, we have other onshore activities planned. On Saturday after racing, we will be organizing a street hockey game on the north pad, which might hold more bragging rights than the actual regatta! Be sure to practice your stick handling prior to the event. Also on Saturday post racing will be gatherings by racing circle to debrief on the day of racing. We will select a few participants to run the discussion and hopefully all can learn from one another.

Please sign up as soon possible. It is a tremendous help to all regatta organizers and volunteers in the planning process if we have solid registration and fleet establishment. CanAm Challenge Registration on Yachtscoring

Look forward to seeing you in Youngstown in July!

Please feel free to contact the regatta co-chairs for more information. Jason Suitor (jts1@internationalchimney.com) or Tim Finkle (timfinkle@rcryachts.com)

It looks like we have some interest in this event again this year. We have two boats registered and a verbal confirmation from several others. It  is a great event with great race organization and great entertainment after the racing.

Welcome Back to the CanAm Challenge at the Youngstown Yacht Club!

Our inaugural “CanAm” was a success and we want to thank all of you who came out to race and support our new regatta format.  We gathered plenty of feedback, good and bad, and will use it to make this year’s event even better.  So mark your calendars now....July 24-26, 2015….even better, go to Yachtscoring now and register your boat to race again this year!

Registration and NOR can be found here:  http://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=1242

We will have a more detailed report shortly with all the details you’ll need, but we wanted to get the notice out now so you have it on your calendars and so we can start building up the fleets!  Please pass along to all your racing friends.
