Harken B35.2 Winch

   I am (again) thinking of replacing the original Maxwell winches.  The Harken B32.2 winches are no longer offered, they have been replaced by the Harken B35.2.  Has anybody tried these before?  They appear to have a larger base diameter and bolt circle than the 32.2.  I'm not sure if they will fit.

	Why are you changing. The original Maxwell 22's are actually a very good winch with a little attention given. Is there a specific problem? You are correct that the new Harkens are not a very good fit. Better to go with Lewmar 30's, and for my money if I were changing, I would go with the Anderson 28's. I have recently taken one of these apart that had been on a boat for 10 years without service, and once apart, I just put it back together again. It needed absolutely nothing. Perfect like the day it went on. Please convey your reasons for wanting to change?

	One of them is binding. Several of the sleeves are damaged and parts are hard to get – if you can get them at all. I have an e-mail in to ARCO who used to carry parts. Besides the possibility that I can’t find the parts, I really don’t want a self-tailing winchs.

	Those all sound like good reasons. If you don't want the self tailors, then check out the Lewmar 30's, whose base is closer to the old Maxwells than t he new Harkens. Our Maxwells require periodic maintenance, but they work pretty well and I like the fact that the drums on them are larger than on the Harkens, who rely on a small drum and higher gear ratio.

	I installed the Lewmar self tailers on my boat because the jaws on the Maxwells were so worn we were dropping sheets all the time. The Lewmars work great and fit on the bases well. The only issue is the bolt circle is a little larger so you have to do some grinding on the inside of the base to make room for the nuts.

	Arco does not have the parts I need. If I go with the current harken model, B35.2 I'll need to make new bases - or modify the old ones. What do you suppose is the best way to go about that?

	Why use the Harken 35's, when the Andersen 28's will fit and are so much a better winch? Or the Lewmar 30's which also fit, and are also a better winch. I have one Harken 32STA brand new in the box. If you can find a matching one, I will make you a deal on the one I have. I was going to go that way, but decided against the Harkens.

	Others on this site do not share your opinion on the Andersen. I believe harken is a better winch than Lewmar - and in any event, I avoid lewmar due to customer service issues. I don't want self tailing.

	In truth, the three are all quality winches and comparisons require hair-splitting. Harkens have a smaller drum, thus less friction, thus more wraps required, and wind on a higher gear ratio. They otherwise do the job just fine. The all-stainless Andersen, will work as well in 10 years with zero maintenance as the day it came from the box and there is no wear on the line jackets. It has a larger drum and lower gear ratio. It is heavier. On other boats I have had no difficulties with Lewmar, but they did require regular servicing. Bill has them on Convictus and likes them. They are all pretty good. To the Laser, some are more easily adaptable than other, if you can find them, will fit the current pedestal. I just purchased another Harken 32 STA, new on Ebay yesterday, to make a pair with another than I own, because another local Laser owner wants to change out his Maxwells, so now I can get rid of them as a pair and make someone happy. :-)
