Throttle gear selector

   After 6 weeks of non use, went out to the boat ,fired it up, pushed in the little black knob, but the gear selector would not move in either direction. After unscrewing the knob partway and pushing farther, everything worked. However this is unlikely to get better. Has anyone else seen this and what can be done to fix it?
