Checkout the article by Rudy Enzmann in February issue of Sailing World titled "5 PHRF Racers under $20k". Pretty much a rave write up for L28 - "These all-Kevlar Bruce Farr-designed speedsters are without equal in their price range" and quotes from DB as well. Pity they reference the wrong web-site though.

I got my Sailing World today also and read the article. I e-mailed Rudy who I first crewed for when he owned a Laser 28, to congragulate him. Now I own a Laser. Will he get called on his statement that there are no alternatives to the Laser 28? I thought it was a nice mix of boats that he wrote about.

I would appreciate seeing that article. Not a surprise that they came to the same conculsion that I did when I was shopping last year. Lotsa fun for the $! Could someone scan and post the article here? I have tried to find a copy at my local magazine shops and just found the usual Sail or Yachting (yawn). Thanks, Doug |

Well, it's not much of an article size wise. It's on page 36 if anyone is looking, would have been nice if they could have got the Class Association web address right. Anyway, here's the text from Rudy Enzmann; Laser 28 Like most good things in life, the Laser 28 is a tad beyond our budget. However, if ever there was a boat worth the stretch, the 28 is it. These all-Kevlar, Bruce Farr-designed speedsters are without equal in their price range. Underway, the Laser 28 boasts near J/27 speed and a great PHRF race record, including offshore races. The 28 also has a strong international class association. Denise Bienvenu, who owns the Quantum loft in Dorval, Quebec, has owned her Laser 28, Convictus, for about 14 years. "I love the boat," she says. "I think of it as a first-generation sports-boat. It’s really responsive—basically a big dinghy." Down below, it has standing headroom, full galley amenities, a huge chart table, the ability to sleep five, and an inboard Bukh diesel. "If you want to go away for a couple of days," says Bienvenu, "you can." There are many clever features in a Laser 28, including a soft locker system for storage, a portable water tank that can be removed in less than five minutes, and a hinged, deck-stepped mast that requires no crane to raise or lower. Laser 28s are often considered to be some of the best built racer/cruisers under 30 feet. Alternatives-None! PHRF range: 126 to 158. DSPL: 3,950 lbs. Ballast: 1,150 lbs. Draft: 4.98’ Beam: 9.48’ J: 9.65’ 1:31.1’ P: 33.14’ www.laser28.org |
