Hi Chris, Happy Holidays.
Interesting that the original product was 'oil' and the replacement products are 'lube'. Makes me think the lubes are a synthetic variant. In my opinion the lubes should be fine. The one banger is not generating massive rpms or torque compared to a 75 horse or higher. john |

Hi all,
Every year at haul out, I drain and refill the saildrive oil. I've always used Motomaster SAE 90 Marine Gear Oil available at Crappy Tire for $17.99 https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-marine-gear-oil-sae-90-946-ml-0281700p.html?loc=plp This year, however, this product is no where to be found at either of the CT stores in my town. After much searching I ended up buying Quicksilver SAE 90 High Performance Marine Gear lubricant. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/quicksilver-high-performance-marine-gear-lubricant-sae-90-1-l-0281766p.html?loc=plp I put it in yesterday and the first thing I noticed was that it's blue! Also, it doesnt have that nasty permeating smell that the typical gear oil I use has. Unsure what to do, I put it in the saildrive because winter is coming and I at least wanted something in there to protect it over winter. I've subsequently gone to the Quicksilver website which states that the High Performance Gear lube is for engines 75HP and above. For engines less than 75HP, they recommend their Premium Gear Lubricant SAE 80W90. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/quicksilver-premium-marine-gear-lubricant-1-l-0281764p.html?loc=plp So, on to my questions: 1) Am I overthinking all this? Are our little Lasers saildrive gears really all that picky on whats in there? 2) Is my use of the Quicksilver High Performance Gear lube a problem? It is SAE 90 after all. Do I need to swap it out with something else? 3) If swapping, what products do other people on this forum use for their saildrive? Thanks |
